Masterful Delegation: You can't — and shouldn't — do it all yourself. There are at least three major considerations when deciding when to delegate. First, in the interest of your firm and your client you must decide who can do the work effectively. Second, ask yourself if this is an appropriate opportunity to provide a junior colleague with a learning experience. Third, strive to spend as much of your work time as possible using your Highest Talents™ doing work you love and making your greatest contributions.
Leadership is sometimes described as accomplishing goals through the efforts of others. Positive leaders use the best in themselves and bring out the best in others to energize their workplace and achieve positive goals together. How can you use the best in yourself? How can you bring out the best in others?
If you want to slow down, whether for personal or professional reasons, unless you plan to sell your practice, you need bench strength. If you don’t have enough bench strength:
My core values are Family, Respect, Adventure, Service and Beauty, not necessarily in that order. Why does that matter? Clarity about my core values helps me make decisions that allow me to fulfill my purpose and enjoy my life. It contributes to my professional success and personal happiness. Like many, I love and value my family above all. I have three grown children and four grandchildren. I’m fortunate to live near my oldest son and two of my grandchildren, so I see them often. While not physically close to my younger son, daughter and two of my grandchildren, I see them a few times a year and stay in close communication. In the words of John Medina, author of Brain Rules, I hang onto my loved ones for dear life. Admittedly, I didn’t need to complete a core values exercise to identify Family as one of my core values.
