Live it Now!
1. What is your current state of satisfaction? In the key areas of family, health, career, finance, personal growth, spirituality, physical environment and community, what is your level of satisfaction? On a scale of 1-10, rate each area of your life. Keep in mind, this is about what you think, not what anyone else thinks. Examples: If you have no spiritual life and that’s fine with you, it’s a 10; if you have $5 million, but want $10 million, maybe your finance is a 5 or 6.
2. Identify opportunities for greater satisfaction and joy in your life. Look at each of your ratings. Where can you make improvements? What improvements will have the greatest impact on your life satisfaction? If you rated both your career and your health a 6, perhaps working on your health first will actually improve both. Or improving your career might improve your finances, too. Improving your finances might improve your family life and your social life, as well as your finances. Look at the interrelationships before deciding which ones to work on first.
3. Select up to three goals in one or more areas of your life. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound (SMART) goals will move you steadily forward, but only to a point. I recommend you always work on one big S-T-R-E-T-C-H goal, a goal that’s so big you don’t know if you can achieve it, but you know you’ll be better off if you try.
What’s getting in your way? Problems, aka excuses, arise whenever we think of meaningful goals. You can address some problems by adjusting your attitude, others might need to be worked on in steps. Examples: 1) Deep down you might think, “They won’t hire me. I don’t have experience.” Of course “they” will hire you. You need to change your mindset, then you might need to learn how to market yourself. 2) Getting up earlier, skipping an evening TV show or finding a running partner can help you overcome the “I don’t have time to exercise,” mindset. 3) If you can’t afford to invest in your career, you might need to cut back on your current expenses or acquire a new client to increase your income.
